Sad news to report that Keith Bishop Sadly passed away in his sleep in the earily hour of Tuseday Morning the 1st August 2017. As you know keith was the hub of the Submariners Association as Membership secretary as well as being Dolphins Branch Secretary. As you can imagine this has been a big shock to us all. It has been difficult in contacting Dolphin Branch Members. Further information about funeral arrangements will be published as soon as we know. The cooperation of Dolphin Branch Members to communicate this news to other members will be much appricated.
In 2001 the Submarine Service celebrated its centennial year. One of the many objectives of the year was to try and find and attract more ex-submariners back into the fold. It was estimated that there could be up to 15000 ex-officers and ratings out there. At the same time the then FOSM wrote a letter to all the members of the Submarine Officers Life Members Association (SOLMA) encouraging them to join the SA as well as to promote closer ties and friendship.
Colin Way, the then RN Submarine Museum Secretary, informed the NMC at the time that he intended to start a new 'Submariners Association' Branch for both Officers and Ratings who did not wish or didn't have a local Branch to go to. At the time he didn't have a clue what would happen and did meet small resistance from some circles. However, he initially started the Museum Branch on 24th November 2000 with twenty seven Members but a declared Membership of one hundred and forty. The Inaugural Meeting was attended by the National Chairman - John Huntley and the National treasurer - Roy James. The first vote by the new Branch was to change its name to the 'Dolphin Branch'. Early applications were staggering and numbers quickly increased and, in fact, membership currently stands at 240 and is the largest branch in the association
Members receive newsletters at approximately 3-monthly intervals. Newsletters will also be published on this and the Submariners Association websites. Members attend the annual reunion and all the remembrance events. There are currently members in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Canary Isles, Cyprus, France, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S.A.
Although basically a "mail order" branch we hold occasional socials and an AGM in November.
Subscriptions for the Dolphin Branch are £20.00 per year of which £15.00 goes to the National coffers.
